Liverpool vs Manchester City
Reading the Match, Not Just the Score
SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER · 4:30PM UK · ANFIELD
This is the match I'm particularly interested in watching this weekend. I believe Liverpool can win.
That assessment comes partly from what I saw when Manchester City played Manchester United. I noticed weaknesses in City's performance that I believe Liverpool could take advantage of.
But Liverpool will need discipline. For me, the key is staying compact, remaining organised and not allowing City the space to use their attacking quality. If Liverpool maintain that structure and exploit their opportunities, I believe the game is there for them to win.
My biggest concern is Liverpool's attack. Reported team news indicates Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo have been ruled out, making the remaining attacking options particularly important. Liverpool need players capable of turning promising situations into goals.
City, meanwhile, have real strength going forward. Even when a team appears vulnerable, they have the quality to change a match very quickly. Both teams are also working under managers who are relatively new to their roles, and the readiness of players returning from international duty could matter.
What I'll be watching
• Liverpool's compactness and discipline without the ball.
• How City create chances against Liverpool's defensive shape.
• Liverpool's attacking selection and finishing.
• How the balance changes as the match develops.

My assessment: Liverpool can win, but only if they remain compact and disciplined and take their chances. This is a conditional view, not a guaranteed result. |
That's the difference between choosing a result before kick-off and actually reading the match.
