02 / THE DECISION
The Decision Before the First Goal
I started the match without making a selection.
I wanted to watch the opening stages, see how the teams approached the game and form my judgement from what was actually happening on the pitch.
Around the 17th minute on my match stream, I made my first assessment:
|
2 — MANCHESTER CITY TO WIN |
Historical assessment from 11 October — not a future prediction.
At that point, Manchester City had not yet scored.
Liverpool were missing several important players, particularly in attack, and I felt Manchester City were controlling the opening stages.
As I watched, I became increasingly convinced that a City goal was coming.
I also considered the strength of the two squads. In my view, Manchester City had greater overall quality and stronger options available from the bench.
Jérémy Doku was another important factor in how I viewed City's attacking possibilities. His ability to operate in tight spaces, and his introduction, mattered to my assessment of how City could develop their attacks.
Liverpool's red card was part of the match, but I did not see it as the decisive factor behind the outcome.
The game finished Liverpool 0–3 Manchester City.
My assessment had been recorded before City's first goal and remained part of the Match Centre's history.
